What Is a TPW Fan? Table, Pedestal and Wall Fans Explained

TPW stands for table, pedestal and wall. It is trade shorthand for the three fan formats that share a motor platform, and it is used constantly inside the industry and almost never outside it. If you have arrived here because you saw “TPW” in a tender document, a vendor list or a product catalogue, this page explains what it means and why the grouping exists.

Why these three are grouped together

A table fan, a pedestal fan and a wall fan look like three different products to a consumer. To a factory they are largely the same product with different mounting.

All three run the same class of motor — a rotor-inside-stator induction motor in roughly the same power band. They use the same blade and guard families, the same winding process, the same balancing and the same test regime. Change the mount, the stand and the body, and the same line builds all three.

A ceiling fan is not in this family. It uses an inverted architecture — the rotor sits outside the stator — with different tooling, different lamination stamping, different balancing and a different assembly line. A factory that makes ceiling fans does not automatically make good TPW fans, and the reverse is equally true. This is why the industry keeps the categories separate when it talks about sourcing.

The three formats

Table fans

A fan on a weighted base, typically 300 mm and 400 mm sweep. The shortest of the three and the most price-sensitive, because it is usually the entry product in a brand’s range.

Pedestal fans

The same head on a height-adjustable column and a weighted base, typically 400 mm, 450 mm and 500 mm sweep — 16, 18 and 20 inch in trade terms. The column and base carry most of the cost difference against a table fan, and the larger sweeps are where thrust and build quality separate one supplier from another.

Wall fans

The same head on a wall bracket, typically 300 mm and 400 mm sweep. Usually ordered with a pull-cord or remote oscillation control, and common in commercial rather than domestic settings — shops, workshops, canteens, places where floor space is not available.

Where ventilation fans fit

Ventilation or exhaust fans — 150 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm — are a different product technically, but they are usually bought by the same person at the same time, so they tend to travel with TPW on a vendor list. Our range covers them for exactly that reason.

What the grouping means if you are sourcing

Three practical consequences follow from TPW being one family.

  • One vendor can realistically cover the whole range. Because the formats share a platform, a specialist can offer table, pedestal and wall across multiple series without running three unrelated operations. Splitting the three across three vendors usually costs more than it saves.
  • Freight consolidates. Shipping table, pedestal, wall and ventilation fans from one location fills a truck or a container far more efficiently than part-loads from several. On our own customers’ numbers this has been worth 4–5% of landed cost — not a negotiated discount, simply the result of the truck being full.
  • Colour and finish can be matched. If the body parts for all three formats are moulded on the same machines from the same masterbatch, the whites match. If they come from three moulders, they do not, and the difference is visible on a shelf.

The standard that applies

In India, table, pedestal and wall fans are built to IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 80), the safety standard for electric fans and regulators. Any TPW fan sold domestically should be made to it, and a buyer should ask to see the test reports rather than take the claim on trust.

SYS Electromac is a TPW specialist

We make table, pedestal, wall and ventilation fans. We don’t manufacture ceiling fans, but we can supply them from reputed partner manufacturers on our own invoice, or introduce you directly — so your whole fan range can come through one supplier. Ceiling fans are made and certified by the partner manufacturer under their own licence. Keeping our own plant dedicated to this one family is a deliberate choice rather than a gap: every line, every tool and every process is built around it, which is why we can offer 24 models across the four categories from a single 100,000 sq. ft. location in Hyderabad at 150,000 fans a month.

We build on an OEM and private-label basis for Indian brands and for export buyers in Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Middle East and Africa. Minimum order is 500 pieces, with three-week lead times on existing models.
